Week 8

Tuesday, October 19: Kalidasa, prologue and acts 1-2.

Thursday, October 21: Kalidasa, act 3-4; Shatz’s “‘Orientalism,’ Then and Now.”

Week 9

Tuesday, October 26: Kalidasa, act 5-6; Tagore, selections.

Thursday, October 28: Kalidasa, act 7; Hossain’s “Sultana’s Dream” and Lewton’s “Feminist Visions of Science and Utopia in Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s ‘Sultana’s Dream.’”

Week 10

Tuesday-Thursday, November 2-4: No synchronous class meetings! Instead, book and attend a one-on-one Teams Conferences and a small group Peer Review for our Second Projects. No Questions or Reflections are due this week.

Second Projects due by the end of the day on Friday, November 5 (11:59pm).

Week 11

Tuesday, November 9: Nguyen Du, Author’s Opening Words, episodes 1-7; [CN: sex work and trafficking]

Thursday, November 11: Nguyen Du, episodes 8-14; Kevin Nguyen’s “This Fucked Me Up: Ken Burns’s The Vietnam War.”

Week 12

Week 13

Thursday, November 25: No class!

Week 14

Tuesday, November 30: Chikamatsu, act 2; Shonagon’s The Pillow Book, selections. [CN: sex work and trafficking, suicide]

Thursday, December 2: Chikamatsu, act 3; Kawakami’s Breasts and Eggs, selection, and Motoko Rich’s “A Novelist Breaks the Code of Being a Woman in Japan.” [CN: sex work and trafficking, suicide]

Week 15

Tuesday-Thursday, December 7-9: No synchronous class meetings! Instead, book and attend a one-on-one Conference and a small group Peer Review for our Third Projects. No Questions or Reflections are due this week.

Third Projects due by the end of the day on Friday, December 10 (11:59 PM).

Finals, Week 16

Our final exam period will be Tuesday, Dec 14, 11:00 – 1:30 PM. We’ll be sharing our favorite projects from the semester and reflecting on the arc of the course. Individual presentations will be posted to WordPress as Reflections Posts.

All finalized posts are due by the end of the day on Friday, December 17 (11:59 PM).
