Love is sound.
Love
Held in their arms,
Listening to the
THU-THUMPING
THU-THUMPING
THU-THUMPING
Of their heart
As their chest
Falls and rises
With every breath.
While they say
“I love you”
One more time.
Love is heartbreaking.
To Soon To Be Gone
When you are no longer in my life,
I will cry my heart out for you that day,
Never forgetting you until the day I die.
You stabbed me in the heart with a knife
So, I have a hard time being okay
When you are no longer in my life.
Trying so hard to deny
That you cannot stay.
Never forgetting you until the day I die.
You made me sad as your wife,
Making me try to pray
When you are no longer in my life.
I’m constantly asking myself why
You had to leave me and go away.
Never forgetting you until the day I die.
Now I have to say goodbye
To all the fun we had those days.
When you are no longer in my life,
I will never forget you until the day I die.
Love is lust.
The Animal inside
The urge was undeniable.
I couldn’t control my primal instincts anymore.
It was gripping my body like a snake
constricting around its prey.
Consuming my thoughts
With unholy desires
While my appetite grew ravenousness.
I burned like fire,
Ready to explode
As I sunk my teeth into
What I was denied
With a thunderous force.
But dangerous I am
When I strongly;
Emotionally
Crave you.
Love is a treasure.
Ransacked Treasure
I search day and night
Looking for the greatest treasure known to man.
It’s hidden well.
Secluded in its secret home.
Untouched,
Never kept forever
By those who’ve found it.
Every day and night
I battle for you
Until I’m black and blue
Never giving up
On my dream of you
When I’m worthy of such a treasure,
Its sweet melody will bring me forth,
To chase after the song like a thief on the run
So, I can steal it from its holder.
For the greatest treasure in the world
Is the love in someone’s heart for you.
I chose to do an unessay for my second Global literature project. I took a bunch of poems about love and put them together. The poems are called Love, To Soon To Be Gone, The Animal Inside, and The Ransacked Treasure. In each of these poems, I define the word love as sounds, heartbreaking and loss, lust and desire, and a treasure. I take my definitions of love and turn them into poems, showing each version of the word love that I use. Through these poems we see the different variations of love throughout the world and the effects it can have on people. For example, the Animal Inside made me and my boyfriend feel these strong urges to be together when we went a whole year without seeing each other. It was the hardest thing we had ever done, and we wouldn’t dare do it again. But during that time away from each other, it felt like there was a starving animal inside of us, desperately trying to get out. Almost as if we had turned into a wild beasts ourselves. And if you ever had that happen to you, you know it’s not easy to control those primal urges. Next, I’ll talk about how the love poems are related to the books we’ve read throughout the semester.
I think The Interesting Narrative and Other Writings works well with my poem To Soon To Be Gone. They both talk about heartbreak and what it’s like to lose someone. In the book, it talks about how a male slave was taken away from his family. At one point, he’s reunited with his sister, only for her to be taken away from him again. Showing that love can be as painful as death and that heartbreak, is only, the steppingstone towards it. The poem is about someone’s loved one dying, how they deal with it, and what they go through.
I think Death and King’s Horseman works well with my poem The Ransacked Treasure. They both talk about love as a treasure to be kept and cherished by those who love each other. In the book, the tribe considers its members and its culture as treasures that it cherishes like life itself. And when it is threatened by the officer and outsiders, the tribe seeks to protect their treasure like a lion protects his pride. The poem is about one’s love for someone as a treasure.
I think The Dew Breaker works well with my poem Love. They both talk about love as something you can hear. In the book, all the characters throughout the stories tell each other they love each other, without using the words “love you”, instead finding other ways to express their feelings. Like some did through sculpture, radio, traditions, church, and other talents and activities. The poem is about all the different ways someone can tell you that they love you with only sounds and how sounds can represent love in an unspoken way.
I think The Recognition of Sakuntala works well with my poem The Animal Inside. They both talk about the primal desire that someone must mate with someone else. In the book, the king wants to pounce on Sakuntala like a predator on its prey or a male when it sees a female in heat. The king and Sakuntala want to be with each other so badly that it causes them to be affected by it physically, making her sick. The poem is about an animal that comes alive whenever they’ve been without their mate for a long time and how badly they want to be together again.

Wow. This is brilliant. I love your incorporation of the different sequences in this piece. They all fit together super nicely. I especially like how you opened with “Love is sound.” Very nice moving piece. Thanks for the share!
